The Five Factors, in Plain English

Every lot we ship is scored on the same five factors our graders use at the sorting tray. No mystery grades — here is exactly what each one means.

Luster

How sharply the nacre reflects light, read under north daylight. Mirror-like luster is the single biggest price mover — it can matter more than size.

Surface

The share of clean skin. Graders estimate the percentage of the surface free of pits, rings and chalky patches; minor natural marks are normal, even at AAA.

Shape

Round commands the premium; near-round, drop and oval follow; button and baroque trade lower — though fine baroques are prized for design work.

Colour

White with silver or rosé overtone, and gold from champagne to deep gold. Evenness of body colour across the pearl is what graders score.

Size

Measured in millimetres and banded: 9–10, 11–12, 13–14, 15 mm and above. Price per gram steps up with each band, not smoothly.

How a Lot Inspection Works

Brief. You tell us type, size band, grade target and quantity — or send the dial result above. Submit it through the inquiry form, same day reply on business days.
Live video inspection. We put the actual lot on the sorting tray under daylight and walk it with you on video — luster, surface, shape, one pearl at a time.
Written grading memo. You receive our inspection notes for the lot: factor scores, tier, weights. Where third-party certificates exist we include them; we never invent lab papers.
FOB / DDP quote. Firm pricing for the inspected lot with export paperwork listed line by line. No obligation until you confirm.

Five honest authenticity checks

Drill-hole inspection — nacre layers visible at the hole; shows coating on fakes, cannot grade quality.
Surface under a loupe — cultured pearls show fine natural growth texture; moulded beads look too perfect.
Weight and density feel — solid-nacre pearls sit heavier than plastic or hollow glass; indicative only.
Certificate cross-check — verify any certificate directly with the issuing lab; a paper alone proves nothing.
Lab X-ray referral — the only conclusive test of nacre thickness and nucleus; we refer, we do not fake it.

Can I buy from overseas without visiting Bali?

Yes. Most wholesale buyers order remotely: we run a live video inspection over the sorting tray, send the grading memo, and ship with full export papers. Details on the ordering from overseas page.

How do I know the pearls are genuine South Sea?

Drill-hole and loupe checks, certificate cross-checks with the issuing lab, and lab X-ray referral for conclusive proof — we publish the whole method, including what each check cannot prove, on the authenticity page.

What do AAA, AA and A actually mean here?

A five-factor score — luster, surface, shape, colour, size — totalled 18–20 for AAA, 15–17 for AA, 11–14 for A. The same rubric drives the dial on this page and the full grading guide.

Are the published prices fixed?

No — they are indicative per-gram bands, dated Q3 2026. Final pricing is quoted per lot after inspection, because two lots of the same tier can sit at opposite ends of a band.
