Double strand of white South Sea pearls on ivory fabric

The best place to buy pearls in Bali

For a holiday keepsake, the boutiques of Seminyak and Ubud do the job. For graded South Sea pearls with inspection notes and a customs-ready invoice, book a by-appointment export desk.

Where you can buy pearls in Bali

Four channel types dominate, and they serve very different buyers. This compares channel types, not named shops.

  • Tourist markets and art stalls

    Typical stock
Freshwater imports, shell beads, occasional genuine pieces
    Grading
    Verbal claims only
    Paperwork
    Cash receipt at best
  • Fashion boutiques (Seminyak, Ubud)

    Typical stock
    Finished jewelry, some South Sea
    Grading
    Rarely in writing
    Paperwork
    Retail receipt
  • Farm-adjacent showrooms (North Bali)

    Typical stock
    Local harvest, loose and finished
    Grading
    Verbal, occasional documents
    Paperwork
    Receipt, sometimes a certificate
  • By-appointment export desk

    Typical stock
Graded loose parcels plus OEM finished jewelry
    Grading
    Written per lot, inspection-based
    Paperwork
    HS-coded invoice, export documents
  • Markets suit cheap souvenirs, boutiques gift pieces, showrooms a look at local goods near origin, and the export desk documented purchases, wholesale and OEM.
  • Any list of "the ten best pearl shops in Bali" that does not say who inspected what is advertising, not advice.

Bali sits in a production zone: Buleleng, Karangasem and Negara are named pearl districts, with farms near Menjangan in the north.

What to check before paying

Run the same checklist in any channel. Sellers who welcome these questions are the ones worth your money.

A written grade

AAA/AA/A charts are trade conventions, not government standards. A grade means something only when it traces to physical inspection or a certificate.

Stated origin

Lombok, Sumbawa or North Bali for Indonesian South Sea pearls. A seller who cannot say where a pearl was farmed cannot say much else about it.

Price in writing

Loose South Sea pearls trade by the gram in Indonesia, finished pieces by the item. A price that exists only in conversation can change by the minute.

Daylight luster

Step toward a window. Sharp reflection and minor natural marks are what nacre looks like. Flawless uniformity across a cheap strand is a warning.

Customs invoice

Cultured pearls ship under HS 7101210000 (unworked) and 7101220000 (worked). Beyond personal jewelry, ask for a commercial invoice carrying those codes.

Return terms

Return and exchange terms in writing, before payment, not after.

What pearls cost in Bali in 2026

Indicative figures as of 2026. A written quotation against inspected goods is the only number that counts.

  • Loose Lombok South Sea, per gram

    Notes
Common trade band for standard lots
    Indicative range
    IDR 100,000–500,000
  • High-grade loose South Sea, per gram

    Notes
Top luster, thick nacre, clean, larger sizes
    Indicative range
    Up to IDR 5,000,000
  • Single South Sea pearl, per piece

    Notes
Producer-reported span across grades and sizes
    Indicative range
    USD 2–7,500
  • Finished South Sea jewelry

    Notes
Pearl grade plus metalwork and design
    Indicative range
    Quote-based
  • Wholesale graded parcels

    Notes
Priced after inspection, confirmed in writing
    Indicative range
    Quote per grade/size
  • Six factors move the price: luster, nacre thickness, surface, size, shape and colour.
  • Indonesian goldens tend toward light champagne; Philippine goldens reach deeper mustard. Useful when matching a strand.

Why serious buyers use an export desk

Because the trade around them already runs on documents. Commercial shipments need export approval from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, a Quality Certificate and, where required, a Certificate of Origin. BKIPM Mataram physically inspects every Lombok shipment.

Bali Pearl Jewelry buys this way: by appointment, covering loose South Sea pearls, finished jewelry, wholesale parcels and OEM. Grades come from inspection or certificates, never assumption, and every quotation is written.

Lombok, 2023
Shipments above IDR 507.9 billion, exports above IDR 430.5 billion
Lombok, 2022
IDR 209.2 billion in total
Indonesia, 2014
Roughly 45% of global South Sea production, around USD 500 million

How booking an appointment works

No obligation. Pricing stays indicative until inspection confirms it.

  1. Send your brief

Size range, colour, grade target, loose or finished, and rough budget, by WhatsApp or email.

  2. Availability note

Within one business day: what is on hand, with dated indicative per-gram or per-piece pricing.

  3. Book your slot

Appointments run in Bali. Video inspection is available for overseas buyers.

  4. Inspect and agree

View lots under daylight, review the written grade per lot and agree terms.

  5. Quotation and papers

The written quotation confirms price. For export, the desk prepares the invoice and certificates.
